Considered the grande dame of downtown Miami hotels, the 30-year-old, 34-story waterfront building needed a facelift, general manager Robert Hill said. But management and contractors conducted the renovations so skillfully — doing work during the day only, working on four floors at a time and erecting special art-covered walls to camoflauge construction — that few even knew it was under construction.

But the most striking new feature: a 19-story LED "digital canvas" lighting up the exterior of the building. The colorful lights twinkle with the silhouette of a dancing girl and, at times, messages like "Welcome to Miami."
