As of February 8, 2012, the US Department of State amped up its travel precautions regarding US citizens traveling across the border to Mexico. In 2011, the safety travel guide stated that only two of the 31 states of Mexico were unsafe to travel to, but it has been increased to 14.
Bevin Ketter, a sophomore, used to travel to Mexico often. However, thrifty rent a car lax she feels that it is "not worth it" to vacation there any more because of the risks. "There are other places that you can travel to for the same amount of fun, and a smaller risk of danger," Ketter says.
According to the Mexico Vacation Awareness Initiative, about 32 percent of all non-natural deaths that occur outside of the U.S happen in Mexico. For people who live in Arizona, this is an appalling statistic because Mexico is a travel destination for many people in Arizona who desire a close-to-home beach getaway.
Sophomore Rachel Kazemi usually goes to Mexico at least once or twice each year. "Nothing has ever happened to me," she says. She thinks that as long as you travel with large groups of people, you are almost guaranteed to be safe.
Cactus Shadows security guard Jill Colombo owns a condominium in Rocky Point and goes to stay there two or three times a year. She's been going to Mexico like this for six years and has never had any trouble. "The media blows it up a lot," she said.
