Travelling deeper into Asian Turkey, to the ancient region of Cappadocia , the intrepid traveller wi

Turkey is the crossroads of the ancient world. Lying between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, it s on the path trodden by merchants travelling along the Silk Road bringing exotic wares from the mysterious Orient to Europe. It has been countlessly conquered and invaded, by the Greeks, the Macedonians, the Persians and others.
Istanbul , once Constantinople , is replete with underground ruins. Once the capital of the Byzantine Empire, cellar doors under nondescript shops lead to ancient Roman cisterns and tunnels. And that's just the start.
Travelling deeper into Asian Turkey, paris day tours to the ancient region of Cappadocia , the intrepid traveller will be rewarded with an array of underground settlements. Around 200 underground cities exist in the region, the most famous being Derinkuyu .
Derinkuyu once occupied paris day tours 11 levels underground. Tourists can visit four of the levels, including stables, chapels, a religious school, and living area for as many as 4000 inhabitants, their livestock, and wine and oil presses – which seems quite handy considering an ancient citizen could've been holed up down there for some time during an invasion. I'm sure the wine helped them get through.
It is believed the complex was first started by the Phrygians in the 8 th – 7 th centuries BC and was expanded paris day tours later by the Byzantines. However, there are also historical references to underground refugee settlements being built by the Persian king Yima .
In the  Kaymakli complex, the houses are built around some 100km of tunnels, and the design and architecture is quite different from that of Derinkuyu , leading some to believe that is was built by a different paris day tours civilization. It has the usual stables, churches, and storage areas for grain, and may also have been used to smelt copper from nearby mines.
For those who want a more modern take on underground dwelling, check out Urgup . The town is modern and attracts a lot of visitors who want to see the houses that were carved directly into the natural caves centuries ago. Many of these now serve as hotels for tourists; some can be rented out as vacation houses (with the understanding that the guests respect their historical value), and some have even been converted to nightclubs.
There are many, many more underground dwellings, villages and cities in the Cappadocia region and throughout Turkey in general, and to cover them all here would be to turn an article into a hefty book but if your curiosity paris day tours has been awoken, I suggest doing some research and maybe consider taking a holiday where you won't get tanned skin, but will almost definitely have your mind blown.
Fiona was one of the first to join codename "The Firm". After a sweaty meeting at a bus station she was recruited based on her dedication, she gave up a publishing career in London to travel round the world. She enjoys eating local food (a lot), learning languages (badly) and living a simple life surrounded by sunshine, smiles and palm trees.
London is steeped in history, with many famous destinations to visit that would take more than one day trip. The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Nelson's Column, Big Ben and Westminster Cathedral to name just a few.
