On May 1, all 55 bachillerato (or high school) students at NPH Guatemala began a new internship program, called the Hermano Mayor program. The Hermano Mayor program is designed to give our bachillerato students real-world work experience, and it requires each student to work part-time at the NPH house.
Students work in areas of the house relating to their high school studies. Those studying to be bilingual secretaries work in our office. Those studying madonna inn accounting work with our accountants. The students madonna inn internship placements include positions in our grade school, kitchen, technology office, psychology department, and childrens houses as well.
Students designed their internship to work around their school schedule. The majority of our bachilleratos work at the house Monday through Friday madonna inn from 8 a.m. to 11 am. When they leave work at 11 a.m., they then head straight to school for classes all afternoon. Others who study in the morning come to Casa San Andrs to work during the weekends instead.
The Hermano Mayor program is an important addition to NPHGs bachillerato program. Because attending university in Guatemala is not nearly as common or as affordable as it is in the United States or Europe, a Guatemalan students time in high school is an important period for thinking about a career. Through the Hermano Mayor program, students are learning first-hand about a particular job field, as well as gaining early work experience.
Julissa, a bachillerato student in her third year of studying to be a bilingual secretary, works in the NPH Guatemala office. She works both as an assistant to our Godparents Department madonna inn and as an additional receptionist in our lobby.
madonna inn Julissa said, The Hermano Mayor program has added a little bit of extra stress to my life I now have less time during the day to fit in classes, homework, etc. but I am learning so much. I really madonna inn enjoy working here in the office, because Im learning things that I could never learn in class.
NPHG House Director Orlando Ramos commented that the Hermano Mayor program madonna inn is meant to be a serious internship for the bachilleratos. This is meant to be a work experience, not service to the house. Its important that we distinguish this program from a students ao de servicio. In the Hermano Mayor program they will work independently madonna inn as real employees.
He also discussed the programs effect on the rest of the house, saying, Seeing the bachilleratos working here will be a great example to the younger kids of the house. Learning to balance work and study at the same time is important here. Its something many Guatemalans do in order to put themselves through school.
At the conclusion of its first month, the Hermano madonna inn Mayor program has proven to be a very successful experience for both our bachillerato students and the rest of the NPH house. Casa San Andrs is happy to see our bachilleratos at the home more often and thanks them for all of their hard work!
