Chewacla State Park was an unexpected stay while Keith worked out the last bit of his notice. The nearest campground to our rental home, R Shaefer Heard , was already closed for the season. We could have jetted over to Pine Mountain RVC, but instead decided move in the direction of our travels once Keith was done working. Auburn, Alabama is most definitely a college town but tucked away in Chewacla, you would never know. (well, except on the weekend when the college kids decide the waterfall is a great place to have lunch!)
Chewacla is a Civilian Conservation Corps park, which was created under FDR s New Deal, but this area was well known by the locals san francisco walking tours well before the state park was created in 1939. Wright s Mill was a happening spot in the late 1800 s, and was a popular swimming hole.
We stayed for 10 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the area. There are plenty of trails to hike, a small waterfall to visit and even a small lake to swim in (but no pups allowed). The sites in Chewacla are well spaced and heavily wooded.
We were assigned #22, a pull through and in retrospect, would have probably selected a back in spot as it offered more privacy. Everything happens for a reason and because of our spot, we got to meet our neighbors who happened to also be fulltimers. It was great to chat with Wayne Antoniette you can visit their blog here .
The sites are gravel, rather level and we found the place to be nice quiet during the November fall weather. Be aware that around weekend college football games, there isn t much chance of getting a spot as they take reservations as early as March for those weekends. The park was roughly half full and still was quite peaceful. There are some full hookups which is wonderful for a state park, along with water electricity only, and primitive camping for tents. Also note that the park is near a quarry, so there is some residual noise during the work week from the workers there. In our camping loop, there was a decent bathhouse with a washer dryer that I took advantage of to do larger loads of towels blankets.
We liked that right outside of the park was a bike path off the main road which made for a nice place to exercise Samantha and that technically, you can ride your bike all the way into downtown Auburn. We just generally enjoyed the time here however, we are ready to hit the road!
Welcome! We spent 5 glorious months san francisco walking tours on the road, but the funds went way too quickly. We've been at work in Portland, Oregon since April 2012, but the wanderlust is setting in again (or more accurately, san francisco walking tours never left). We plan on hitting san francisco walking tours the road again in the Spring of 2013.
