New Zealand travel is used to catering for the tourist. Apart from the car and the campervan (both of which are easy to rent or buy for your trip) you can explore cruises hawaii with New Zealand bus travel and New Zealand rail travel.
Perhaps the easiest way to travel this beautiful country is by car or campervan (also called motor homes). I've been lucky enough to bomb about the bush in a Holden Monaro coupe. You car drivers out there know why there have been so many songs written about, and for, driving!
Having taken the local buses all over Auckland and the North island I can tell you that they provide a good service, obviously the more remote the destination the more infrequent the service. And they do the whole thank you thing. You know, when you get off the bus you call out thanks to the bus driver as he or she pulls away burning rubber.
If you still want the whole bus experience but would like a bit of organisation then there are backpacker buses and although you'll not be in charge of your itinerary you will benefit from the knowledgeable guide travelling with you.
