Pros: Low rise buildings around a court w/beautifullanscaping, trees, flowers, grass. Large bathrooms, good spa, nice robes (w/dress code) to walk to spa across grassy courtyard in. Very nice catered food respresentative of the Sonoma wine country.
Cons: (not hotel fault) long drive from SFO, OAkland or Sacramento. Had flight delay landed hotels san francisco in middle of rush hour traffic and crawled at 15 miles per hour thru Oakland. Avoid rush hour if driving..made a normally 2 hour drive into a 3 1/2 hr drive. OAkland airport is updating many restaurants in Terminals, nice and clean airport website hotels san francisco nice helpful.
OAkland airport upgraded since I was last there and right size to get off plane and to baggage and then to rental cars all off site by shutle p/u across the street. Shutle p/u slightly confusing so ask before you leave the terminal. Also SFO had fog w/flight delays OAkland did not...quick bus ride to Hertz; car waiting and off..
Due to rush hour traffic decided to drive to Sonoma hotels san francisco via Carcanos bridge (4.oo fee for bridge from south, have money handy) then exit road 37 past Napa to Sonoma. Drove right into the Sonoma Square and saw the Basque Bakery famous for scandinavian honey cake (was delicious) and Sonoma chicken salad, sourdough bread.
Easy check in, easy walk to room. Room older, windows small, no view (RM 182) but clean and nice touches like robes and slippers. Hotel grounds felt more like an outdoor park than a hotel. Would not know by decor inside or out was in wine country.
Customer service alittle under par for a Fairmont : called Spa and they said they were busy would call me back: never did. They lost a sale from me...asked hotels san francisco for a shirt pressed had a hard time getting someon to p/u and then was not delived back to me by 6:30 pm as hotel guest book stated. Charge 10.00.
It's really unfortunate that you took 3.5 hours to get to Sonoma from OAK. That's highly unusual. I drive this all the time and it's never taken me that long. But I rarely make this trip at rush hour and never on Thursday or Friday evenings. Is that when you did this? If so, far better off to use SMF if you have the option. I feel bad about this because several of us were trying to help you out with your route planning. All for naught it seems.
