Rogers was awarded one of 53 scholarships to study abroad with the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad program. The merit-based award covers the full cost of an academic year abroad, providing an immersion experience through living with a host family in Indonesia while attending a local high school.
"I have always been interested in learning about other cultures in an in depth way, and this makes learning about a country much more real than learning about it in a book," Rogers said. "I've had the opportunity to travel a lot with my family, australia travel packages so I think that has sparked my interest to study abroad."
Rogers was selected as a YES Abroad finalist from a national pool of applicants. The application process is made up of various stages. The initial application was due in January. By the end of February, Rogers found out that she was one of 90 semi-finalists. She then had to attend an in-person selection event in Denver.
"It was a lot of fun and I got to meet all of the other kids involved in the program," she said. "We had interviews and group evaluations. Then I had to wait three more weeks to find out if I made it. It was a long process with lots of anxious waiting."
Her original country preferences were Ghana, India, and Morocco. australia travel packages The country chosen for her was Indonesia. australia travel packages "At the end of the day, we are just supposed to be open to anything, and that's what I wanted to do," she said. "I am really excited to go to Indonesia."
She is joining australia travel packages eight other YES program students going to Indonesia with the program. They all met in Washington DC recently. The students are from Idaho, Alabama, Massachusetts, Illinois, California, and Lowell, Vermont.
australia travel packages The YES Abroad program was initiated as an extension to the Kennedy-Lugar YES program. The program was first authorized by the U.S. Congress in the aftermath of September 11 th as an effort to increase dialogue and understanding australia travel packages between the U.S. and countries with significant Muslim populations.
The program for 2012-2013 provided opportunities for Americans to study for one year in select countries including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ghana, australia travel packages India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Thailand and Turkey.
