I have lived in St. Maarten, back in 1993 and 1994. Due to tragic circumstances I had to return to The Netherlands, but I have come over here to spend my vacations almost every year since, because I absolutely love this island. Back then, in 1993, I paid roughly a 1,000 Dutch Guilders for an airline ticket (equivalent to 480 euros), from Amsterdam to St. Maarten avis rent a car cleveland ohio and back, economy class. Those prices more or less remained the same until 9/11 happened. After that, the prices of the airline tickets skyrocketed due to extra safety measures hat were taken, which we all can understand, of course.

I think many tourists from The Netherlands want to spend their vacation in St. Maarten, but with these airline prices, many of them will fly down to Curacao. And St Maarten, with its one pillar economy, tourism, can't afford to lose many tourists to cheaper destinations. Of course I already called the KLM head office in Amsterdam with this question, but the only answer I got was:

Zoals vermeld hebben ze een monopolie positie op de vluchten naar SXM. Tevens voerden ze als verdediging aan dat de landingsrechten op SXM zwaar drukken op de ticketpreis vanwege het beperkt aantal avis rent a car cleveland ohio passagiers dat op SXM uitstapt.
Dat er zo weinig personen uitstappen op St. Maarten is niet verwonderlijk gezien de prijs. Want als je naar curacao is de kans groot dat je een tussenlanding maakt op St. Maarten. Het is dus een kwestie van vraag en aanbod voor de KLM.
I totally agree! I get very upset with the same situation as well! I think that KLM/Air France misuses its monpoly to maintain these prices. And I that tthe St. Maarten government/ avis rent a car cleveland ohio department of tourism should file a complaint at the Dutch Competition Authority (NMA). This need to be stopped!!!
Helemaal met de bovenstaande schrijver eens,maar wie brengt nu eindelijk het balletje aan het rollen? het is toch niet te begrijpen dat het eilandbestuur niet in de gaten heeft dat de bereikbaarheid van het eiland de hoogste prioriteit moet hebben voor het promoten van het tourisme! Ik denk trouwens dat er diverse luchtvaarmaatschappijen zijn ( met name Duitse)die maar wat graag op SM willen vliegen
