Flight attendants with Southwest Airlines are set to vote on a new contract that will see the airline flying to overseas destinations, including Alaska, Hawaii, and other international destinations. Officials from the union said that they have reached a tentative deal with the airline and airline CEO Gary Kelly spoke of the deal in an email to employees this week.
As of now, there is no schedule set as to when the overseas flights will begin, but the ultimate goal is to take over the overseas flights that are currently offered by its subsidiary AirTran. Stacy K. Martin, president of Transport Workers Union Local 556, said that if the deal goes through, there could be flights to destinations such as Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central America, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, the Bahamas, and Aruba. The new deal covers all aspects of the new destinations, including pay, per diems, and scheduling on international flights.
