Relative to the other two types (oblique and transverse) they are pretty much just decoration. The obliques (middle layer) are slightly more useful, but the real workhorses are the transverse - they wrap around the torso attach to the spine at the back, acting kind of like a corset. Since the space between the ribcage and pelvis is unsupported by bone (the spine stands alone) the transverse abs are crucial. Weak transverse abs are the biggest factor airline ticket discount in lower spine/disc problems (like mine, ugh).
