Derek Dooley cruise last minute wasn t out of a job very long. While many thought the recently fired Tennessee Volunteers head coach would be headed towards a broadcasting job of some sort, he is instead about to be hired as the new wide receivers coach on Jason Garrett s staff in Dallas. ESPN s Adam Schefter first reported that Dooley is set to join the Cowboys staff, but neither Dooley or the Cowboys have made nay mention of this.
The reason that some people are surprised about the hire, is the fact that Dooley was announced as part of ESNPU s extended national signing day coverage just a few days ago. Dooley hasn t accepted an offer from the Cowboys, but logic would suggest that if he s on the verge of doing so, ESPN isn t about to bring him on for an audition on ESPNU.
However, his connection to the Cowboys might be something the four letter network might want to exploit. The again, Dooley was just recently fired by Tennessee and he d be joining Gene Chizik who was also recently fired and since re-hired elsewhere. Having two coaches fired because essentially they didn t recruit well, analyzing a recruiting cruise last minute class doesn t totally make the most sense.
