For those of you who are interested in the nitty-gritty of the work-life balance and how to make sur

That's right!  Last week was  National Single and Unmarried Americans Week!  Now, probably you think I'd be tempted to make some joke about how somewhere a lonely cat lady is sharing a bottle of tasty Pinot Noir with her favorite longhaired Persian, Mr. Bubbles.  But no!  There will be no Mr. Bubbles jokes!
You see, being single enterprise car rentals brantford is serious business.  And the type of joke I almost made above is indicative of the social bias against unmarried people.  My gross insensitivity shows why we need a specific week to bring attention to the plight of single and unmarried people in a married world.  According to the Census Bureau, about 100 million Americans—nearly half of all adults—are unmarried.  Yet, unmarried people tend to be frequently overlooked by employment and social policies that favor marrieds in everything from family-leave laws to lower insurance rates for couples.
"A huge proportion of the population is unmarried, and the single population is only going to grow. At the same time, all the movement nationally is to offer benefits to those who are married, and that leaves single enterprise car rentals brantford people dry."
Meanwhile, the demographics of unmarried people are changing.  Americans are much more likely to marry later, meaning that they'll spend a greater proportion of their lives single or unmarried.  Additionally, with life expectancies enterprise car rentals brantford growing, the chances that one spouse will significantly outlive another increases.  Add it all up, and you get a climate where the concerns enterprise car rentals brantford of unmarried people cry for attention.
Although many of the laws favoring married people are government mandated—marriage enterprise car rentals brantford benefits are dependent on a government rather than religious or spiritual institution—the effect of those mandates are often felt in the workplace.  It's employers who must dole out those benefits, and thus, are often seen as biased against single and unmarried employees.  Unfortunately, there may not be much employers can do to counter the benefits bias towards married people.  But, there is a lot that one HR managers can do to counter prevailing moods of social bias towards married people in the workplace.
Bella DePaulo, a visiting professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has coined a term for discrimination against single people: singlism.  And she calls singlism one of the last accepted prejudices; in fact, it is the title of her new book, "Singlism: What It Is, Why It Matters and How to Stop It."
Often, enterprise car rentals brantford you'll find that a married person who says they need to run home to check on a sick spouse or take care of kids is seen as having a legitimate need.  But an unmarried person who makes the same claim about a boyfriend or niece might not be given the same leeway.  The needs of married people are often unofficially—sometimes even unconsciously—considered in questions of promotion or firing. Meanwhile, HR folks have been trying for years to root out the notion that heavy travel and overbearing jobs ought to be reserved for single people, because they have fewer other pressing responsibilities.
So, while there may be nothing you can do to change the official policies that favor married people over single people, it's important to create a climate of tolerance and inclusion for unmarried people in the workplace.  Make sure that unmarried people are given the same chances and fair shakes afforded to their married colleagues.
